Not all 3D printing filaments perform equally when applied to print-in-place mechanics. A filament that creates a gorgeous decorative vase might result in brittle, snapping hinges on an articulated flexi model.
To help you select the ideal material for smooth articulation and high drop resistance, we tested standard PLA, Silk PLA, Matte PLA, PLA+, and PETG across hundreds of multi-jointed prints.
1. Standard PLA / Tough PLA+ (The Golden Standard)
For overall reliability, dimensional accuracy, and joint strength, standard PLA or Tough PLA+ is unbeatable.
- Pros: Excellent dimensional stability, virtually zero warping, sharp overhangs, and predictable shrinkage rates.
- Cons: Basic glossy finish can show layer lines on dark solid colors.
- Verdict: 10/10 for articulated figures. Perfect tolerances right off the plate.
2. Silk PLA (Stunning Aesthetics, Weaker Layer Adhesion)
Silk PLA contains elastomer additives that give it a metallic, reflective sheen. It is easily the most popular filament choice for flexi dragons and mythical creatures.
- The Challenge: Silk additives reduce inter-layer bonding strength by roughly 20% to 30%. In thin joint pins, aggressive bending can cause layer delamination.
- The Fix: Print Silk PLA 5°C to 10°C hotter than standard PLA (e.g. 215°C–225°C) and reduce printing speed on outer perimeters. The higher nozzle temperature ensures adequate layer fusion.
3. Matte PLA (Velvety Finish, Hides Layer Lines)
Matte PLA is formulated with minerals (such as calcium carbonate) to scatter light, resulting in a non-reflective, ceramic-like look.
- Pros: Almost completely hides layer lines, giving prints a molded or sculpted appearance.
- Watch Out: Matte filaments can be slightly more abrasive on brass nozzles and can exhibit slightly higher friction on sliding plastic-on-plastic joints. A tiny drop of dry silicone lubricant on the joint pins makes them ultra-fluid.
4. PETG (Tough and Heat Resistant, Prone to Stringing)
PETG provides superior heat resistance and impact elasticity compared to PLA, making it ideal if your prints will be kept in hot cars or displayed outdoors.
- The Challenge: PETG is notoriously hygroscopic and prone to stringing. In articulated models with dozens of link cavities, stringing can bridge across the clearance gaps and lock up the hinges.
- Recommendation: Dry your PETG thoroughly before printing, and increase retraction speeds slightly.
